Toronto, ON – March 30, 2020

OUTtvGo introduces its brand-new and highly-anticipated sex comedy Avocado Toast the series following the story of two millennial friends, Molly and Elle, who are forced to learn about their parents’ new sexcapades after coming out and a divorce. The show is set to make its worldwide premiere May 18th, 2020 on OUTtv’s digital platform OUTtvGo (Canada), Vimeo and Amazon (United Kingdom, USA).

After a lifetime of dating men, 31-year-old teacher Molly (Heidi Lynch), surprises herself when she falls in love with a woman for the first timeWhen she finds the courage to come out as bisexual to her suburban parents, they empathetically reveal their own admission – they’re swingers and throw sex parties. When Molly gets dumped, she reluctantly heeds dating advice from her sexually blossoming parents and clumsily embarks onto the bisexual dating scene while navigating her broken heart.

Meanwhile, 33-year old creative director Elle (Perrie Voss), is reeling after learning her parents are divorcing and her mother, who also happens to be her boss, had an affair with a dude young enough to be Elle’s brother. To avoid the wrenching pain of her exploded family unit, Elle wages revenge in an eye-for-an-eye corporate takeover against her mother.

As life as they knew it crumbles away and their love lives, and careers become precarious, it’s their codependent friendship that takes all the heat. Finally, when the pressure cooker blows, they are shocked to realize that the nuts haven’t fallen so far from the tree.

“We are so excited to finally share Avocado Toast the series with the rest of the world. This is the show I desperately needed at a time in my life when I didn’t see bisexual representation anywhere.” says Heidi Lynch“I had never seen a bisexual coming out story. My parents are some of my best friends, but I still got so caught up in the fact that coming out to them would be hard. In the end they were extremely accepting. I wanted to create representation for how coming out as bi was confusing and challenging and also representation for accepting, modern, baby boomer parents.”

Avocado Toast the series takes assumptions and flips them on their head. Who our protagonists think they are, and they think they know is challenged at every turn in this series. I think we’ve created something that will open dialogue between generations, communities, and female friendships.” says Perrie Voss“It’s hilarious, heartbreaking and relatable. Yes, it’s a comedy, but there’s a lot of heart and truth within it. I have always been amazed at how tears and laughter can be so closely related in times of grief, growth and change. This is that show!”

OUTtvGo is home to a vast catalogue of LGBTQ+ content and we’re constantly on the look-out for new and exciting programming that caters to all members of the community,” says Brad Danks, CEO of OUTtv. “Avocado Toast is a show that explores love and friendship in the modern age and will leave you clamouring for more.”

We have incredible women in the key positions of creators, screenwriters, story editors, director, editors, production designer, producers and stars. That ensures the voice and culture of the series is dynamic, powerful and inclusive, says, producer Charlie David.

(Toronto/Montreal) The Independent Production Fund and its 40-member Pre-Selection Committees have selected 20 short-form series proposals which are now eligible to advance to the next phase of the application process and apply for Production Financing. These include 14 projects in English and 6 in French.  Three web series previously funded by the IPF achieved certain milestones of success and are eligible to apply for second seasons.

The IPF received 160 proposals for web series funding from across Canada. Applications included a 2-minute proof-of-concept trailer, creative material, audience engagement strategy and the team for key creative positions.  The members of the Pre-Selection Committees who are industry professionals and advanced media students, reviewed, scored and discussed the projects in order to select the short-listed projects.

Producers of these selected projects are now invited to submit complete Production Applications to the IPF by May 1, 2019.  An international jury will evaluate the proposals and make recommendations to the Board of Directors of the IPF who will announce final funding decisions in June.

The trailers for all the projects submitted were viewed online during the month of March by hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts who have watched, liked, shared and commented on the content. Avid fans of the IPF trailers can see what a challenge the evaluators had!  “Short-listed or not, these productions have already developed fan-bases and the creators have learned a lot from the analytics and audience feedback to the content they posted online”, noted Andra Sheffer, CEO of the IPF. “That information is invaluable to producers and is one of the exciting advantages of creating content for digital platforms and online audiences”.

In 2019, the IPF celebrates a decade of funding dramatic short form web series. The IPF has invested $15M in the production of 131 web series in the past 10 years. It invests $1.5 – $2M annually in 10-15 projects. These series represent all demographics and genres, including comedy, sci-fi, horror, animation, thrillers – and can be accessed at www.ipf.ca/webseries.

Thanks to all our evaluators for undertaking this selection challenge and sharing their insights and viewing experiences.

The IPF is incorporated as a charitable foundation with an endowment valued at $35M.  It uses the interest generated by the endowment and return on its project investments for its annual operations and project funding.  In addition, it is certified by the CRTC as a Certified Independent Production Fund and is eligible to receive Broadcast Distribution Undertaking contributions.  Cogeco Connexion contributes $1.9M annually to the IPF to administer the Cogeco Television Production Program for investment in dramatic television series. The Board of Directors of the IPF is composed of independent representatives from the industry and undertakes all final funding decisions.
